Today I’ll be talking all about making church arrangements. Please note that I only have experience with the church we dealt with which is the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk (Dutch Reformed Church).
If you are of a different religion or if you belong to a different ‘sub section’ of the Christian faith, I do suggest that you find out how your place of worship works with regards to church arrangements.
The specific church we chose was because of my paternal grandfather who, back in the day, was quite a well-known architect. He designed churches all over South Africa and the church we chose to get married in he designed as well. My parents were the first couple to get married there, my aunts and uncles also got married in that church and both my grandparents’ funeral services were held there.
First I booked our wedding venue (read my post on the process here) which gave us a date.
That is where things got tricky. I had to then phone the church to find out if they had that specific date open. You can read all about the ‘drama’ we encountered with that here.
Dolla dolla bills
You have to know one thing though, you don’t get married in a church for free. That’s why we made an appointment with the church lady and got a price list.
Yes, you read that right. A price list. You can choose whether or not you want to use the equipment at the church or bring in your own, which was the DJ’s in our case. There are other things as well such as making use of the projector, paying someone to unlock the doors on a Saturday, a security guard to watch the cars, getting someone to play the organ as the bride enters the church etc. etc.
How much you pay for the church will ultimately depend on the options you choose from the price list.
Also remember that you will probably need to pay a basic hiring fee for the day as well.
There are rules at churches as well.
For instance, we can’t use seeds as confetti because it’s impossible to sweep out of the paving they have in front of the building and the birds end up eating it. Depending on what seeds it is, they then have digestive problems, which is just bad news for the congregation’s cars…
You also can’t take too many pictures inside while the dominee is preaching because it distracts him. No jokes…
That was basically all there was to booking the church for our wedding day.
