Since publishing my first post with your most frequently asked questions about venus fly traps, I’ve gotten a couple more questions. Let’s get into it:
Why are there black stems?
Your plant will let some of the stems die off. Each stem with a snapper can only close and catch bugs a certain amount of times (usually four times). After that, that stem pegs and a newer, bigger one will grow back. All you need to do is cut off the dead stem and throw it in the bin.
How many plants do you have?
In total, 25.
I don’t live in Pretoria or near Limpopo. Where can I get a venus fly trap?
Which plants do you currently have?
We have a variety of venus fly traps, an American Trumpet, Sundews and a Bladder Wart.
Where can I get spatum peat moss?
You can buy the soil mix at your local nursery. They should have some in stock.
Where can I get reverse osmosis water?
At Oasis or any other shop dedicated to selling water. You can also check a bottle of water; it will say reverse osmosis water on the container. If you really can’t find the correct water, you can order from your vendor of choice. We have a 5 litre container in our cupboard especially for the plants.
If my plants are in a big pot, can I just pour water in the top as it won’t touch the plants?
I wouldn’t risk it. Make sure your pot has proper drainage and a saucer.
Must the plants be in an ugly plastic pot?
No but you need a pot with good drainage that’s made of a good, hardy material. You are welcome to ask Therese or your vendor of choice to repot the plant into your pot of choice.
How big do these plants get?
The enormous venus fly traps you see in cartoons are a myth. These plants do not grow up to 5 meters tall and eat anything it deems as food. The biggest they can get up to is about 15 cms in height but it depends on what variant it is. Regardless, you don’t have to build an extra room to house your plant and it won’t eat the neighbour’s cat.
Do they smell?
To insects yes, but to humans, no. You do get variants that emit a strong odour but these babies don’t smell like anything so they won’t stink up the house.
Why are you so obsessed?
Why are YOU so obsessed?! I’ve discovered a love for gardening and looking after plants. All our friends are having kids, we’re buying plants and taking care of dogs. *shrugs*
If you guys have more questions, please feel free to leave it in the comments or send a DM my way.
